Expressionist and laconic.
Are these mutually exclusive?
Strictness and chance.
Naïve and sentimental.
Natural and artificial.
Laboured and snappy.
Sombre and funny.
Inept and professional.
Are these mutually exclusive? For the most part yes, but not in Ötvös. Or maybe even in him; these qualities are nevertheless all present in his paintings. Tension, connections, boundaries, oppositions, coordinations, contrasts and, of course, harmony. No serious problem may do without that.
